Description of Workshops During the Intensive Portion of LDI
The intensive “in-house”portion of the Leadership Development Institute (LDI) features scenario-based small group (7- 9 Ambassadors) discussions of specific topics that influence leadership and personal development. Ambassadors also have opportunity to present their unique Leadership Development Action Plans (LDAP)

Leadership Support: Mentoring and Effective Networking



This workshop stresses the importance of community in achieving leadership success. It emphasizes a leader’s role in establishing appropriate relationships and support systems to maximize the realization of the vision. The notion of “no man is an island” is explored. The importance of networking, regular communication with peers and elders, and idea sharing is emphasized. Proactive selection of mentors and actively cultivating mentoring relationships are also discussed.



Goal Setting



Effective leaders must set realistic goals and utilize practical means for assessing progress. This interactive workshop explores the importance of setting goals and living a directed life. Practical definition of long term and short-term goals are reviewed. The importance of measurable objectives and checkpoints are discussed. Participants are encouraged to begin with writing their personal goals and objectives and regularly monitoring their progress. They are further encouraged to set achievable goals when involved in leadership activities.



Dress for Success



This workshop explores the importance of appropriate dress for appropriate venues and activities. The sociological/cultural significance attached to personal appearance is reviewed. Tips related to personal grooming, clothing selection, etc. are reviewed.



Leadership Maintenance:
Mental Health



This workshop is designed to help define mental health and describe its components. Further, the workshop explores how sound mental health influences quality of life as well as effective maintenance strategies. Signs of mental health compromise are reviewed and proactive action is discussed.



Leadership Survival:
Police Interactions



This workshop discusses disturbing statistics about African American men’s in particular, interaction with law enforcement. Leadership strategies for change are discussed. Important tips on how to react and respond when stopped by law enforcement agents are reviewed.



Leadership Dynamics:
Civic Engagement Strategies



In an era where so much is politics or is politicized, it is crucial that young leaders know how to navigate in a political environment, exercise their full citizen responsibilities, use protest and other strategies, and understand their rights. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss how young leaders can best interface with, change, and indeed lead within the political systems of their communities, cities, states, and country.





Leadership Maintenance:
Male Sexual Behavior



This workshop explores male sexual behavior. The discussion of sexual behavior goes beyond condom use and the avoidance of unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease, and includes a discussion about ethical, moral, and emotional ramifications of teenagers engaging in sexual activity.



Leadership Maintenance:
Health Matters



This workshop discusses the importance of men taking responsibility for their own health. Public health statistics related to male longevity, prevalence of disease, doctor visits, and other factors may be introduced. Sociological and cultural differences are discussed. Healthy behaviors related to nutrition, seeking medical counsel, etc. are reviewed. Given that many men appear more reluctant to engage in optimum health maintenance activities, this workshop attempts to promote a more health conscious attitude amongst the participants.



Money Matters:
Financial Literacy



This workshop explores the importance of money and money management. Differences between income and wealth are explored. The importance of credit and credit management is discussed. Strategies for maintaining a sound financial footing are discussed.



What It Mean To Serve



This workshop explores the factors and experiences that influence the decision to serve others whether as a volunteer avocation, or a life-long vocation.
